We had two wonderful growing season in 2015-2016 with our first nursing home inspiration garden. It was wonderful to hear what this garden means to many different individuals in this community. For some, it is a way to continue developing a life-long hobby. For others, the garden is an opportunity to get outside and to feel connected to one another and to nature. Many resident and staff also have shared with us about their current or past gardens. Throughout this process, we loved hearing people’s ideas, feedback, and stories.
On our first planting day, we had a great turnout and participation from everybody that works and lives at the home. We all worked together and got our hands dirty planting in ten of the raised beds. Ms. Farley planted the very first plants, a row of sweet peppers. Mr. Goldring was a gardening machine, and once he got going, he did not stop until he had filled nearly two of the beds with edible plants. Ms. Alice was particularly drawn to the Thai basil, and she planted it in a prominent spot so she could come back and check on it.
Our short film prominently featured our gardens at Stoddard Baptist Home. Thanks to Priyanka, Mr. Hood, and all the residents and staff who kindly participated in the film and supported the garden.
