Location
Fort Stanton Recreation Center
At the Fort Stanton garden, we grow an abundance of produce specific to the desires and requests of the local community. The vegetables and herbs grown are primarily used by older adult patrons of the Rec Center through the Seasoned Seniors program.
We lead seasonal gardening classes with these patrons, accommodating the programs to their physical needs as well as their passions! We have previously also participated in the local summer camp for youth.
Our History with Fort Stanton
What started several years ago as an abandoned plot with depleted soil has now became an engine of productive gardening. The garden space in the rear of the facility features vegetables and herbs. Crops grown at this location include potatoes, greens, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, okra, tomatoes, and more.
2019 notable growing successes included a fall planting of garlic, harvested in June, along with beautiful eggplants harvested in August and September.
In 2020, seasonal gardening classes were launched with the Seasoned Seniors Fort Stanton program.
